Automating assessment and feedback using RunRev cgi in Web-based teaching
Dave Brooks teaches in the Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He specializes in the area of technology applications in science teaching. He has published over 150 articles, books, and software programs. His current efforts involve creating interactive Web resources for chemistry and chemistry teacher training. Much of Dave's current work can be reviewed at his Web site -- http://dwb.unl.edu.
Dave was involved in developing a series of Web-courses with extensive use of automatic testing and immediate feedback aimed at high school chemistry teachers. These courses used a HyperCard-cgi and WebStar with AppleEvents under Mac OS 9. In a first attempt at updating these courses to current technology, he made use of RunRev stacks. Today he uses RunRev cgi scripts and xml-lie files to accomplish the delivery of the courses.

If you ever wanted to create a networked application, a chat or just are curious what one can do on the internet besides watching and creating websites, then this presentation is for you.
Learn the basics of TCP, ports and sockets, as well as how easy it is to use these with Revolution. Get a summary of the commands and functions you need to make your own networked application, and learn what the things are that you need to avoid. In addition you will be shown some techniques to implement a protocol.
Watch the presenter struggle and sweat while he makes a TCP based chat app before your eyes on stage. Finally you might ask him whatever you please, in a questions and answers session!
After attending this presentation you will be able to use Revolution to make networking applications with TCP.
* Alex Tweedly
Alex will give a talk on UDP applications - when to choose UDP over TCP, illustrated by a small sample app using UDP to demonstrate some of those reasons.
